Friday Writing Exercise: Get out there

Today’s Friday Writing Exercise is not so much an exercise in writing as it is in getting involved.

Writing can be a pretty solitary pursuit, but there are communities of writers and even if you’re too shy to talk to people or ‘network’ it’s always worth getting out there, even if it’s just to see what other people are up to.

Two Melbourne suggestions could be:

Stilts ‘Served’ zine launch tonight at Old Bar, Fitzroy

Tim Danko Double Comic Launch tonight at Blender studios, Franklin st Melbourne CBD

GORE issue #2 launch Thursday 1 August, Union Club Hotel, Fitzroy

There are so many things to do and see! Have you investigated whether there is an open mic, spoken word or writers meetup in your area? Joining your state writers centre is a great way to stay informed about what’s on and how to get involved.

And if you’re not feeling like leaving the house, why not get your work out there? Check out these opportunities:

Extempore postcard submissions ($150 fee if you are selected for publication!) close tomorrow!

The Glenfern Writers’ Fellowships for emerging and mid-career writers (3 months free use of the Glenfern Writers’ Studios) close Monday

School of Music Poets call for submissions to anthology ‘Flood, Fire and Famine’ close 29 August

The Joanne Burns Award for prose poems and microfiction closes 30 September

And if you happen to have a manuscript between 20,000 – 60,000 words long submit it to Hologram by 11 August for your chance to be one of 2 novellas by writers under 30 published and awarded $1000!
